Monoclinic Zirconia

Essential for Many Ceramic Applications

Monoclinic zirconia refers to pure zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) that does not contain any dopant or additive and exhibits a monoclinic crystallographic structure under temperatures up to 1170°C. Thanks to its outstanding physical and chemical properties, monoclinic zirconia powder is used in a large variety of ceramic applications: pigments for tile decoration, refractories, PZT and dielectric materials, abrasive materials, thermal barrier coatings and advanced technical ceramics.

The most comprehensive zirconia powders portfolio

Saint-Gobain ZirPro operates two industrial zirconium oxide manufacturing processes based either on thermal or chemical treatments of natural zirconium silicate. This allows ZirPro to offer the most comprehensive portfolio of monoclinic zirconium oxides in terms of chemical purity, particle size distribution and specific surface area, for consistent quality and performance.

CF zirconia particle
CC/CF zirconia is obtained by a unique thermal process based on the fusion of zirconium silicate at high temperature. CC/CF powders exhibit:
  • Standard chemical purity
  • Large range of particle size distribution including very fine sizes
  • Enhanced reactivity due to their unique dendritic morphology associated with high specific surface areas

CC/CF zirconium dioxide powders are used in manufacturing:

  • Pigments for ceramic tile decoration
  • Refractory bricks and molten metal filters
  • Thermal barrier coatings
  • Spark plugs
  • Special glasses

CS, SF and EF zirconia powders are obtained by chemical purification of the CC and CF zirconia. Their higher purity enables them to be used in:

  • Electroceramics (PZT, MLCC)
  • Magnesium-stabilized zirconia ceramics (MgPSZ), a ceramic composed of CS and SF powders exhibiting a distinctive yellow color
  • Thermal barrier coatings

CZ zirconia particles

CZ and CZP are chemically processed zirconium dioxide powders that show high chemical purity along with fine and narrow particle size distribution. CZ and CZP are ideal for:

  • High-intensity pigments for ceramic tile decoration
  • Magnesium stabilized zirconia ceramics (MgPSZ), a ceramic composed of CZ and CZP powders exhibiting a white color
  • Thermal barrier coatings
  • Glass and gemstones
  • Polishing slurries

CZE zirconium oxide particles

CZE zirconia powders are manufactured by chemical processes. They exhibit high chemical purity, submicronic particle size distribution and high reactivity. CZE zirconium dioxide powders are used for:

  • Electroceramics (hard and soft PZT, MLCC)
  • Magnesium or yttrium stabilized zirconia based ceramics, by co-milling and sintering with magnesium or yttrium oxide
  • Zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA), by co-milling and sintering with aluminum oxide
