UprYZe® composite ceramic material
UprYZe is an especially unique innovation
Ceramic materials are increasingly used outside of their traditional field of applications, often competing against materials like metals or polymers. This requires a ceramic material with improved mechanical performance, wear and corrosion resistance.
To address this challenge, Saint-Gobain ZirPro offers UprYZe, a composite ceramic material with a co-stabilized zirconium oxide (ZrO2) and alumina (Al2O3) matrix reinforced with self-grown alumina-based platelets.
ZirPro proposes two grades of UprYZe with different compositions and properties: UprYZe-Shock and UprYZe-Intense
UprYZe-Shock for mechanically demanding applications
UprYZe-Shock is suited for applications for which high mechanical performance and impact resistance are a must thanks to:
- Outstanding toughness (Kic = 14 – 15 MPa.m1/2)
- Exceptional impact resistance (+50% vs. 3mol% Y-TZP).
Performance of UprYZe-Shock is achieved with a standard sintering cycle (1450°C-2hrs in air), no special sintering is required (ex: HIP).
UprYZe-Intense for harsh operating conditions
UprYZe-Intense is of interest for applications for which extreme resistance to wear and/or humid environments are required due to:
- A wear resistance equivalent to the best-in-class ceramic material
- Outstanding stability of mechanical performance when subjected to stringent hydrothermal conditions
UprYZe-Intense has excellent wear resistance
UprYZe-Intense shows no degradation under very harsh conditions
