Saint-Gobain ZirPro is a world leader in the manufacturing of zirconium oxide powders, for more than 30 years.
Zirconium Oxide (Zirconia) Powders – ZrO2
Three main manufacturing processes:
-
Fusion and reduction of zirconium silicate (zircon sand) : fused zirconias (ZF)
-
Original process based on zircon sand fusion and chemical treatments : thermal zirconias (CC, CS)
-
Chemical processes from zirconium oxychloride (ZOC) : chemical zirconias (CZ, CZE, CYZ) and zirconium hydrates or hydroxides (ZHO).
This gives Saint-Gobain ZirPro a unique and strong position, for the development and the manufacturing of a complete range of zirconium oxides, in terms of:
-
Chemical purity: from 98.5% (fused and thermal zirconias) to 99.95% (chemical zirconias)
-
Particle size distribution: the mean particle size of the zirconia powders (D50) vary from several hundreds of microns to less than 1 micron (typically 0.3 micron).
-
Specific surface area (or “reactivity”): the reactivity vary from 1m²/g for the fused zirconias to 250 m²/g for the zirconium hydroxides.
-
Dopants: some dopants can be added to the zirconium oxide powders in order to modify or improve:
- The crystallographic structure: magnesium oxide (MgO) or yttrium oxide (Y2O3) are added to the zirconia, in order
to stabilize the tetragonal and/or cubic phase. Without any dopant, the zirconia has a monoclinic structure
- The surface properties of the powders, specific surface area, porosity, acidity
- The colour of the final ceramic : special coloured zirconias have been developed, in order to obtained coloured
dense ceramics.
Applications
For almost every application using zirconium oxide, Saint-Gobain ZirPro can propose or develop a solution adapted to your needs:
